* Two twin mattresses side by side create nearly the same dimensions as a king size bed.
* Many people are confused about the size of a standard king (eastern king) versus a California King Size bed. Please not the California King is actually not as wide as the king size bed by four inches. The California King bed is four inches longer so it is for tall people that prefer the length over the width. Most people prefer the width and choose standard king size (eastern kingsize) beds.
Height of Mattress
Mattress heights seem to be getting thicker every year. Keep in mind that thickness does not have everything to do with comfort and support. Mattresses range from two inches to twenty-eight inches thick. Fourteen and sixteen inch mattress are very common. Box springs are generally about 7 inches thick. The standard height for platform beds and metal bed frame (bed rail) is 7 1/8 inches from the floor to the bottom of the rail where the box spring sets on. You might want to consider the height of your existing mattress or the height of the mattress you will purchase.
Height of Headboard or Canopy
If you have extra-thick mattresses, you don’t necessarily have to get taller headboards and footboards but you might want to avoid the short headboards and footboards. Canopy beds also work will with very tall beds. Often time, upstairs bedrooms can have slanted ceilings that need to be considered in the height of a headboard or canopy.
Height of Footboard (visible television)
Of course, many have a television or entertainment center in their bedroom and should think about the height of the footboard not obstructing the view to the television. Some people like to be able to sit on the end of the bed. Others simply like the fact that more subtle footboards make smaller bedrooms feel larger and more open. Many times interior decorators and designers like open toe beds or short low footboards.
Simple Clean Lines, Ornate Scrolls and Castings or Massive Corner Posts
